We at DamnYouOhio.com are lifelong, committed Ohioans. While the negative angle may make you feel uncomfortable, that is somewhat the point. (We would be lying if we didn't admit that some of this stuff is just painfully funny.) The only way things will get better is to be completely clear and unafraid of our problems. This is what people are saying about our state; if we can't listen to them how can we make it better?

OK... excuse me as I make my way to the top of my soap box.
Isolationism in a plurality only makes things worse.
As I started my move from Medina Ohio to the big city of Akron Ohio I was nervous. I always had lived in the country and I wasn't sure what it would be like living in a metropolitan area. To make matters worse, the newspaper and people in my life didn't help. Reading the crime watch for Akron is a whole different ballgame than reading the crime watch for Medina. There's a lot more death, rapes and just plain ugliness. I was also told that the area of town I was moving to was very gay. I'm not exactly sure what that meant. But it was told to me in a very serious, you-better-watch-out kind of way.
I've now lived here going on 3 years. I have never been raped, murdered, beat up or even stolen from. I do happen to run into some gay people every once in a while. But believe it or not, they aren't having some lude sex in front of me or anything. They are usually picking up carry-out or grocery shopping when I happen to run into them.
But here is what did happen to me since I moved to Akron. People who were once a mystery to me are now part of my life. Once you see a place or a person for your own eyes, it's not as bad as you imagine it to be. By being closer to things that frighten people in Medina actually make the world less frightening.
What I'm saying is, the more you close yourself off from the world, the more frightened you are going to become. You can't make the world go away. You are needlessly scaring yourselves.
Opening your heart and finding love for what frightens you is what will set you free. Closing down and ignoring or even hating what you don't like will only bring the hell for which you fear closer to your life.
